There’s a saying in sporting circles that “it’s better to be lucky, than good”! The same may hold for speaking…but as with sport, only up to a point. But, in business, I would say that ‘it’s better to be memorable than good.” It’s better to leave a networking event, an online or off-line presentation with the audience remembering you because they will be more likely to want to talk to you before they find out whether you’re good or not.
I remember being at a workshop many, many years ago, in Market Harborough at the far end of the main shopping area with a group of business owners of various age, size and levels of success. It was a workshop on marketing and networking from Gary Outrageous (Yes, that’s his business name).
I remember, Gary, asking us to exchange business cards, but write our favourite cartoon character on them. It was an unusual exchange of cards because quite a few of the attendees didn’t seem to have watched cartoons, ever. At the end of the workshop, as if by magic, Gary asked us all to stand up and sing along with a recording of ‘Bring Me Sunshine’, Eric and Ern!
Now, I can’t remember a word Gary said about marketing or networking but, I do remember that and I still recommend people look at Gary’s work-he’s not only memorable, but he’s also very good. He made an impact!
So, what can you do to make an impact, ensure you are memorable? So are there ways you can check your impact after a certain amount of time of speaking?
