Entertaining an audience.

I sat opposite an old friend in a tearoom recently and we were talking about how early experiences had affected our ability to communicate as effectively as we could have done.

He told me the story of how he wondered why he had struggled to find his voice and how he was at home one day with his young son and daughter. They were running around the room laughing and calling out "Tig" every time they touched.

Their grandfather looked up from his paper and spoke above the noise.
"Children should be seen and not heard!"
My friend held his hands out, his mouth open.
"That's what he always said to me!"
